This article is dedicated to Bobbi Sanderson Adams, my grandmother, who was born in New York on the same day that Bobby was buried in Barcelona. She died on July 20, 2001 after a life full of joy and peace. She promised me that she would always remember him.Bobby was born in Barcelona on September 20, 1908. His real name was Robert Sanderson but he preferred to be called, “Bobby” because it sounded more Spanish. He had sad eyes and black curly hair that he always wore very short with a small ponytail at the nape of his neck. He had an oval face with little color in his cheeks. He was a very lively boy and always made friends easily. He was a very popular boy, because he could play the drums and the flute and sing well. He had a deep voice that would fill a theater to full capacity when he sang.Bobby wanted to leave Barcelona because he wanted to get out of there at any cost. He always dreamed about getting to America, where he would become famous because of his talent for playing the piano and drums, singing and writing poetry. In Paris, where they lived for a while, Bobby thought that the idea of living in America sounded like one continuous dream to him, but in reality it was not like that at all. In fact, it was a very hard reality. But Bobby was never one to give up easily. He believed that with a little luck and a lot of hard work, he would eventually succeed in his dreams.Bobby’s father, Albert Sanderson, was born in England and moved to Barcelona with his mother when he was only 13 years old. Bobby’s mother, Teresa Vinyals Valls, was born in Barcelona. At the time they were married, Albert worked as an assistant for an architect whose name is unknown. They lived on the fourth floor of house number 23 on Rambla de Catalunya (#23 Rambla de Catalunya), near the Manzanares River.
